Your contributions to NNPS make it possible for the organization to award scholarships to deserving nursing students. To date, in just 3 years, we have handed out $39,000 in scholarships and many of the recipients have told us that without NNPS’s help they would not have been able to realize their goal of becoming nurses or advancing their education.
The nursing profession has a storied past. Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of modern-day nursing. Over 150 years ago she wrote notes on what it meant to be a nurse and her comments continue to form the foundation of the profession today.
The importance of the entire environment to the patient’s overall outcome was the forerunner of what is known today as the “social determinants of health”. Looking at the whole patient and treating both the disease as well as its cause and aftermaths were concepts she emphasized. Today we call that patient-centered care.
This is a very exciting time to be a nurse. Changes in health care are rampant and are challenging all of us. However, even in the face of unprecedented change, seeing the NNP scholarship recipients beginning their careers, with the compassion and intelligence each demonstrates, should help assure all of us that we will be in good hands moving forward!
5th Annual NNPS Golf Outing is a win-win for golfers, scholarship recipients

All proceeds from the event go to fund the scholarships awarded by NNPS to deserving students entering the nursing profession or advancing their nursing education.
“The NNPS scholarships help alleviate some of the financial challenges students face as they pursue a career in nursing,” said Jan Lanier, chair of the NNPS Scholarship Committee. “Well-educated nurses are the backbone of the health care system,” she added “and it would be a tragedy if these outstanding students’ career goals went unrealized because of financial issues”.
In introducing the 2016 recipients Jan Lanier noted that all of the winners are not only excellent students, but also leaders, mentors, and community volunteers. The recipients are:
- Lexus Benedict, Lancaster – $1,000 Scholarship
- Emily Briggeman, Grove City–$1,000 Scholarship
- Megan Wisman, Westerville – $1,000 Scholarship
- Alicia Moody, Washington Court House – $2,000 Scholarship
- Abena Sefa, Columbus, $2,000 Scholarship
- Tia Mullahey, Columbus, $4,000 Scholarship
- Tenia Scarver, Columbus – $4,000 Scholarship
While the students were recognized for their dedication and hard work, winning golfers were recognized for their tenacity on the course. Teams recording the lowest round for the day were:
1st Place: French-French-Hardymon-Ledford
2nd Place: Raderstorf-Brun-Slusser
In addition Alec Slusser had the longest drive, for the men and Marci Browning for the women; Tim Raderstorf was closest to the pin for the men and Linda Green for the women; and Pat Kuntz recorded the longest putt for the men and Nancy Cowman for the women.
Congratulations and thank you to all those who made the outing a success!
